For
my semester project, I thought I would explore the concept of the hive mind
mentality and how it has been a prevalent element in society and media. The hivemind in society can take a form of collective consciousness from a group of
people that think on the same wavelength; having similar views and ideas for
certain topics that come to the forefront of discussion. With technology,
society has expanded on different avenues of communication, leaving people with
a multitude of options to express their thoughts and feelings to the unknown
masses. That is explicitly the case for social media and general interaction
between people that keep a close eye on what goes on in the world inside or outside of media and
entertainment. The hivemind comes to play in this situation when you have a
group of people that have the same interests and opinions about anything that
comes up in the media we consume. It attracts complete strangers in places like
internet fourms or discussions, familiarizing themselves over the same
interests with each other, and creates a community of like-minded individuals.
The hive mind is usually cast in a negative light, mostly honing in on the
sheep mentality that derives from a hive mind, but it does have its merits in
creating discussion over various topics. I plan on doing an essay post on this
topic of the hivemind, providing examples, research, and questions that may
resonate with the class once the presentation is nearing its conclusion.
