For my semester project what I am really
interested in exploring is the influence and power of YouTube and Youtubers on
today's society. It is very clear that this platform of social media is powerful
and that people are interested and engaged in another person's life. The
reasoning for why the YouTube is so successful is because there is diversity in
their content, which they don't produce them selves, caters to a wide variety
of audiences. My influences for this project is first and foremost is
because I am a consumer and as a consumer. I follow a lot of these influences
on YouTube myself and I found myself to be extremely curious to know how these
seemingly average humans gained a following and popularity. How do these average consumers go from being a consumer to a brand being consumed, and a perfect example YouTuber who is such is Lily Singh, also know as IISuperWomanII.
The way in which I want to explore the
power of YouTube is to do a social experiment, in which I am producing content
on this platform as if I am integrated and already an active creator. What I
hope to gauge and understand while producing this content is how easy or
difficult it is to gain a following and what type of content has greater
influence over a group of people. The way I will be keeping up with the
progress is by creating content, such videos and vlogs as much as possible, and
then by analyzing this process on a blog. My project will try and attempt to understand how this following comes about and people and how they know become a brand.

I like your idea for the project because I am also a big YouTube user. I have wonder how the YouTubers gained so much success and wanted to know what it takes. What stood out to me from your project was that you are willing to put yourself in that situation and get a first hand look at what it takes. It may seem easy from the viewer's opinion, but it's interesting that you are willing to see whether that is true or not. There is a lot of different ways to make the videos (vlogs, beauty tutorials, lifestyle tips, prank videos, style videos, etc.) maybe you can see which one is the one that gets the more views. Personally, my favorite are vlogs and "What's In My Bag" videos, because I am a nosy person. I think that this will provide a lot more information and content for your project than just research by itself. Also, I feel like with the right promotion and ideas in your videos and content you can definitely get a lot of information on whether it is easy or hard to gain followers and views. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Hamna,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea for the semester project. I always found it interesting how Youtube has become a career for people. For your social experiment I think it would be interesting to interview many different people and ask them how they influenced by famous Youtubers. I also think it would be interesting to explore the different types of content that is shared on Youtube from makeup tutorials to simple family vlogs. Why are we as a society so interested in the lives of everyday people? How did this obsession begin ( I would argue, it began with the Kardashians.) I think all of this would be worth exploring.
