Critics of "safe spaces" believe that the concept goes against freedom of speech |
In light of the University of Chicago rejecting "safe spaces" a couple months ago, I would like to focus my semester project on the idea and execution of safe spaces. The concept of safe spaces is still relatively new, and has staunch support and criticism.
I would like my project, which will most likely be an article or research paper, to explore both sides of the argument. Safe spaces were originally created to provide LGBT students a space where they could be free of hate or discrimination. Today, safe spaces extend to individuals who feel marginalised by other members of society. Which consequently has created larger criticism, with critics believing the existence of safe spaces goes against freedom of speech.
I will cover the creation and development of the concept, before then making arguments for both the support and criticism of the idea. Look for examples where safe spaces have worked and haven't worked. I would also like to delve into how social media looks at safe spaces, as I have seen many posts and memes about the concept.
